What are the benefits of using precision workholding in EDM?
Updated
The primary benefit of standardized workholding in both die-sinking and Wire EDM WEDM is maximizing actual spark on-time by shifting setup operations offline. In conventional operations, manually indicating workpieces or clocking delicate graphite and copper electrodes inside a dielectric tank leaves the machine idle for hours. With a standardized tooling system, operators fixture, align, and preset components on an external granite table or CMM while the machine continues burning existing jobs uninterrupted.
Precision tooling also establishes process continuity between CNC milling, grinding, and EDM stations. Electrodes machined on a high-speed mill retain their physical datum as they transfer directly into the sinker EDM quill using matching chucks and dedicated drawbars, spigots, or pull studs. This micron-level transfer repeatability reduces manual re-zeroing and reference errors between operations across multi-cavity molds, and provides the rigid, standardized platform necessary for lights-out robotic automation.
