Why does EDM electrode wear occur, and when does it happen?

Updated

Electrode wear occurs because thermal spark discharges erode both the workpiece and the cutting tool simultaneously. More than 90% of all electrode wear takes place during the first one to two microseconds after the gap ionizes. Longer pulse ON-times dilute this initial wear spike across a longer discharge duration, which significantly reduces the total wear percentage.
