What is through-flushing in an EDM workholding system?
Updated
The flushing-through feature, also known as internal or central flushing, is a built-in fluid conduit that routes pressurized dielectric fluid directly through the machine quill, chuck, and clamping interface into hollow electrodes or workpieces. Internal seals and O-rings protect the mating interface around the drawbar, spigot, or pallet, channeling fluid straight through the center of the tooling to limit leakage. This provides an uninterrupted internal delivery path that pumps clean dielectric fluid directly into the active spark gap.
In die-sinking EDM, standard external spray nozzles cannot reach deep enclosed cavities, tall ribs, or blind pockets. Through-flushing forces dielectric oil out from inside the electrode cavity, continuously washing away melted metal particles, chips, and carbon buildup from the cut zone. This debris removal helps prevent secondary arcing, stabilizes the electrical discharge, improves cavity surface finish, and can increase burning speeds while extending electrode service life.
