The Chip Carrier is for the System 3R RFID chip used for automation.
The threaded cleat holes are for 5th Axis Automation robot picking.
Read full answerHow do MaxxMacro circle holders compare with older System 3R electrode holders for graphite machining?
The MaxxMacro system is more repeatable and reliable compared to the older system. Many of our customers use the MaxxMacro circle holder for grinding carbide and machining medical implants.
When it comes to machining graphite, the MaxxMacro system provides sufficient clamping force to hold the material securely in place. If needed, you can create a slight flat on the graphite to enhance the grip.
In terms of using round graphite, we have found that transitioning to square saw-cut blanks and utilizing a pocket holder can lead to cost savings of up to 40% on graphite. Machining the round shape into the blank before creating the hex shape helps establish the center.
Read full answerAre MaxxMacro holders compatible with larger chucks?
Yes. MaxxMacro 54 holders can be used on MaxxMacro 70 and MaxxMagnum chucks, and MaxxMacro 70 holders can be used on MaxxMagnum chucks.
The system is designed for this downward compatibility. Although a MaxxMacro 70 pallet may physically engage some MaxxMacro 54 chucks, MaxxTooling does not recommend it because the smaller chuck lacks the support surface for which the larger pallet was designed.
Read full answerWhat technical factors determine whether an electrode holder should be made of aluminum, brass, or stainless steel?
The selection of holder material depends on the operating machine dynamics, dielectric chemistry, and production duty cycle.
Aluminum holders provide the lowest weight and mass inertia, making them an option for high-speed jump flushing cycles and continuous C-axis rotation where rapid Z-axis acceleration helps reduce machine strain and servo hunting.
Brass holders offer high electrical and thermal conductivity while dampening high-frequency mechanical vibration, making them well-suited for high-amperage cavity burning in standard hydrocarbon dielectric oils and straightforward to modify for custom shop fixtures.
Stainless steel holders deliver structural stiffness and wear resistance against repetitive chuck clamping cycles, and corrosion resistance when the appropriate grade is selected, making them useful in corrosive deionized water environments (such as Wire EDM WEDM and hole drilling) and in precision cleanroom production where reference datum surfaces must remain dimensionally stable over years of service.
Read full answerWhat is an electrode holder in milling and EDM?
In milling and EDM, a holder grips and positions the workpiece or electrode during machining.
MaxxTooling holders let an electrode be machined to shape in a milling machine before it is used in the EDM machine. They also allow electrodes to be changed while preserving their established position.
The electrode can remain mounted in the same holder as it moves between milling and EDM. This reduces repeated positioning between machines.
Corrosion-resistant holder materials, such as suitable stainless steels, are used where the tooling is exposed to water-based dielectric in Wire EDM WEDM.
Read full answerHow do I choose a workpiece or electrode holder for my machining application?
The right holder depends on the specific tool or workpiece you need to secure and the machining operation you will be performing. Look for compatibility with your tooling and consider factors like material strength and adjustability.
Read full answerWhat internal wall tolerances do pocket and round stock holders have?
Achieving tight tolerances in pocket or round stock holders while keeping costs reasonable is challenging. For this reason, these holders are intended for use with saw-cut electrodes rather than precision-machined parts. Both types typically have inner wall tolerances of -0 / +0.001".
Read full answerCan MaxxTooling manufacture pocket holders with tighter internal wall tolerances?
Tighter tolerances on the internal faces of a pocket holder are possible, but require additional machining and cost. Feasibility depends on the quantity ordered and the tolerance required.
For ground electrode sticks that need repeatable corner location, consider the MaxxMacro V-block holder.
Read full answerWhat are the benefits of dovetail holders for machining and workholding?
MaxxTooling dovetail holders support large workpieces and different materials with exceptional stability and precision. Made from rust-proof 440C stainless steel, they are used in CNC milling, EDM, and Wire EDM WEDM.
Their retractable locating pin and uniform clamping force help provide repeatable positioning, minimal material waste, and easy automation integration.

Read full answerCan I buy a MaxxTooling holder without its pallet?
Yes, we can quote and produce a holder without its pallet.
However, standard holders are manufactured and aligned on the pallet as part of an automated process. Supplying the holder separately requires additional manual machining, mounting, or disassembly. The saving is usually less than 10% of the total cost, and in some cases the separate holder can cost more than the standard assembly.
