Why does an ER collet chuck nut appear off-center before tightening?

The retaining feature inside an ER collet nut is intentionally off-center. It prevents the collet from falling out of the nut.

Evaluate concentricity with the collet installed and tightened in the chuck, rather than by the appearance of the loose nut.
