What are the advantages of a self-centering vise compared with a fixed-jaw vise?

A self-centering vise uses synchronized opposing lead screws that drive both jaws simultaneously toward the fixture centerline, whereas a traditional single-station vise moves only one jaw toward a stationary reference jaw. The principal advantage of a MaxxVise self-centering vise is that the workpiece centerline remains fixed at the exact same spatial coordinate regardless of dimensional variations in the incoming raw stock. This constant centering is critical for 5-axis CNC machining, as it keeps the part aligned over the rotary table axis of rotation, balancing machine kinematics and preventing tool reach limitations.

What is the largest part I can hold in your vise?

The maximum opening on our largest vise is 120 mm (4.72″), but you can hold even larger parts when using the dovetail portion of the vise jaws. We do not provide a maximum part size for a vise. There are many ways to hold a workpiece in our vises. Every application requires a different level of holding force to retain the workpiece firmly. Larger workpieces tend to require higher holding forces to eliminate chatter and vibration and ensure high-quality parts.

Do I need to pre-indent a workpiece before clamping it in a MaxxVise?

No pre-indenting or other pre-machining is required for ordinary clamping in a MaxxVise.

If you use the dovetail portion of the jaws, the workpiece needs the corresponding dovetail machined into it.

Is the MaxxVise self-centering vise suitable for Wire EDM WEDM?

The main body of our MaxxVise Self-Centering Vise is made from a stainless steel grade designed to withstand prolonged submersion in Wire EDM WEDM. The jaws are hardened, and the vise includes multiple stainless components, such as AISI 410 and AISI 420.

However, the standard adapter plate used to center the reference plate on the bottom of the vise is not made from a corrosion-resistant material.

We can offer a custom 440C stainless steel adapter plate, making the entire vise assembly suitable for use in corrosive environments.

Can I mount a self-centering vise on a machine plate using an adapter?

The recommended arrangement is a MaxxMagnum chuck on a custom adapter plate for the machine. A self-centering vise or other MaxxMagnum or MaxxMacro fixture can then be mounted on the chuck.

Send the machine-table details so the adapter can be designed for it.
