We currently do not offer the MaxxMacro probe with a 2mm ball tip assembled at the same pricing. The 2mm tip is an optional size and not commonly used for standard probing applications. However, we can custom make it upon request.
The 2mm tip is an optional size and is not typically used in everyday probing. but can quote it as needed. Our 2mm and 3mm probe tips are tapered to 3.9 mm shank. Unfortunately, we are unable to manufacture them with a straight shank.
Read full answerHow do I check and correct the concentricity of a newly received MaxxTooling probe?
To check and correct probe concentricity, use an indicator on the probe’s ball tip and follow the adjustment procedure for the probe type.
Stationary probe:
- Secure the probe in its chuck and set the indicator to zero at the starting orientation.
- Rotate the probe 90°. Correct half the indicated deviation using the opposing fine-adjustment screw.
- Repeat in 90° increments through a full rotation.
- Repeat the adjustments, gradually tightening the retention screws after each fine adjustment until the tip is aligned.
MaxxMacro 54 spring-loaded probe:
- Lightly loosen the three retaining bolts, leaving the U-washers in place.
- Zero the indicator at 0° or 180°, rotate 180°, and correct half the deviation using two opposing threaded adjustment pins.
- Repeat on the 90°/270° axis.
- Once 0.003 mm concentricity is reached, lightly tighten the adjustment pins and recheck.
- Gradually tighten the three bolts to 8 Nm, give the adjustment pins a slight turn, and recheck concentricity.
Check concentricity periodically and correct it when needed.
Read full answerWhat is the difference between a stationary probe and a spring-loaded probe?
A stationary probe has a rigid body and tip. A spring-loaded probe adds limited movement to protect against overtravel. Both detect position through direct electrical contact with the workpiece.
For the MaxxMacro 54 spring-loaded probe described in the operating instructions, the protection travel is 1 mm in X/Y and 0.5 mm in Z.
Read full answerShould I choose a stationary or spring-loaded probe?
MaxxTooling generally recommends stationary probes when a rigid reference is appropriate.
The spring movement in a spring-loaded probe does not protect the tip against every accidental contact. A tip can still bend or break if mishandled.
A damaged tip can introduce measurement errors and interrupt an automated operation.
Read full answerHow do MaxxTooling stationary probes detect position in EDM applications?
MaxxTooling stationary probes detect position through direct electrical contact between the probe tip and the workpiece during an EDM measuring cycle. The body and tip are rigid.
A spring-loaded probe uses the same contact principle but adds limited movement to protect against overtravel. A stationary probe does not provide that movement.
